This project was for a Book Design technology course in which we chose a book to redesign from the inside out. I chose to create a limited edition handmade copy of the class, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I started with plain text, designed the interior pages, custom watercolored graphics, hand stitched all the signatures, and then bound it. Since it is such a revered and well read story, my goal was to create a version that was more playful and modern. I chose mustard to be the main uniting color and employed lots of texture to create an enjoyable tactile experience, like the brass bird, woven book cover, and handmade paper.
I employed my knowledge of typography, Adobe InDesign, studio art, and book binding techniques to create this handmade limited edition book. I learned how to impose signatures, hand sew the binding, case in the book block, and overall plan every element of the design to complement each other. It took a lot of attention to detail and hours to make sure it came out perfectly. The whole process made me appreciate books on a whole new level.
